Maggie Johnston is thrilled to be working with Chicago Children’s Choir again as an In-School conductor. She took a seven year hiatus from the organization to raise her three children and is very happy to be back. During that time, Maggie worked as an adjunct Professor at DePaul University in their Music Education department. She taught the Middle School Vocal Methods Class and was also a mentor for student teachers in elementary and middle schools all over the Chicago area.
Prior to working at DePaul University and for Chicago Children’s Choir, Maggie worked at Washburne Middle School in Winnetka, IL, serving as Choral Conductor, general music educator and Music Director of the annual Spring Musical for grades seven and eight. She grew their choral program in the four years she was there to have over 150 members, all who received first place honors at Solo Contest (IGSMA).
Before relocating to Chicago, Maggie was a member of the New York City Teaching Fellows/Americorps Program and taught at PS 135 in Queens, NY. There, she implemented a general music and choral program for kindergarten through eighth grade. Her chorus was selected to perform in a NYC choral festival as well as a Region 3 choral festival.
Maggie is also a performer and has toured with numerous musical theater companies, among them Theatreworks USA and Sail Productions. She also served as a Soprano section leader for Kenilworth Union Church in Kenilworth, IL and at Second Congregational Church in New York, NY.
Maggie attended the Juilliard School Pre-College Division in New York, NY majoring in Piano Performance and Vocal Performance and was a full scholarship recipient. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, a Minor in Piano Performance and a Musical Theater Certificate from Northwestern University, graduating cum laude. She also holds a Master of Science in Music Education degree from Queens College and was a full scholarship recipient graduating with high honors. In her free time, Maggie enjoys spending time with her husband Zach, son Bennett, and daughters Molly and Tessa.
