For the past few months we have been carefully planning for our 2020/21 season with guidance from public health officials, the city of Chicago, Chicago Public Schools, our Board of Directors, families and staff. We thoroughly considered three possible paths for how we could continue to serve students in our in-school and after-school programs while prioritizing core principles of health and safety as well as maintaining excellent and accessible music education. With careful deliberation, we have decided to move forward with virtual programming until at least January 2021.
Modified Program Overview
Neighborhood Choir programs, Dimension and Voice of Chicago will be held virtually until at least January 2021. Our after school programs will continue to deliver an unparalleled experience, complete with high-level instruction, rigorous expectations and unique virtual performance opportunities, helping students reach their potential as musicians and as people.

*Singers are expected to attend rehearsals for their ensembles. We understand planned and unplanned absences will occur from time to time. Having no more than three total absences for Neighborhood Choir and Dimension singers and five total absences for Voice of Chicago singers in the first semester (September 8, 2020 – February 6, 2021) will allow singers to maintain a meaningful experience. Singers who exceed the absences allotted may be placed on a leave of absence.
**Arts Enrichment Sessions are scheduled quarterly in 8-week sessions. Having no more than two absences per eight week session will allow singers to maintain a meaningful experience.
About Optional In-Person Opportunities
In addition to the aforementioned virtual programs, CCC will offer completely voluntary, ad hoc opportunities for singers to meet in-person. This will allow singers and staff to maintain the social bonds that are important to the choir experience.
For these opportunities, the program staff will communicate the safety requirements of participation.
About Arts Enrichment Sessions
These small group classes are included with registration in any of CCC’s after school programs. As space allows, these sessions will be available to singers outside of our after-school programs. This allows connection with singers between CCC programs as well young people across the country. With a variety of topics, singers can explore personal areas of interest and learn from new conductors.
For singers outside of CCC’s after-school programs, tuition for each 8-week course is $100, and tuition for each 4-week course is $50.
CCC has a pay-what-you-can policy. At registration, you will have the ability to enter the rate you would like to contribute per session.
CCC has a long-standing commitment to serving children and families regardless of their financial situation. All programs are heavily discounted through the generosity of individuals, corporations, and foundations, allowing us to remove a financial barrier to participation.

In-school programs will be held virtually until at least January 2021, while continuing to deliver an unparalleled experience, complete with high-level instruction, rigorous expectations and unique virtual performance opportunities, helping students reach their potential as musicians and as people.
Throughout the year, singers will have the opportunity to:
- Learn music from many genres and cultures – authentic to the style and language of each piece, incorporating movement as appropriate
- More deeply understand how music is created across artistic traditions
- Engage in dialogue about the historical and social context of music learned and its relevance today
- Feel a sense of pride through high expectations and opportunities for virtual performance
- Build life-long friendships
Modification of Curriculum
In-School Program singers will have the opportunity to participate in two in-depth, project-based initiatives. For the first part of our program year, singers will explore a century of Chicago history, including the oft-forgotten events that led to the desegregation of Chicago’s beaches. Rainbow Beach, a musical work collaboratively created with youth that shares this history, will be the focus of our annual Black History Month event. The second part of the year will explore the rich musical styles and genres of Latin America. From salsa to merengue, singers will learn multiple styles of music from Latin America and the rich cultures from which they originated.
In addition to the aforementioned sessions, In-School Program participants will receive invitations to participate in virtual choir performances and access to student resources, including pre-recorded lessons.
How does it work?
Chicago Children’s Choir’s virtual learning program has been designed to adapt to school models offering virtual or small group in-person learning, allowing programming to occur while students are in school or at home. All participants must have access to the internet, a device with access to Google Classroom and headphones if sessions are being held at school.
What is included in the registration for 2020-21 after-school programs?
When enrolling in CCC’s after school programs, singers are invited to participate in weekly ensemble rehearsals, four or eight week Arts Enrichment Sessions, one 8-week small group theory tutoring and one 8-week small group vocal technique class.
How do I sign up for the Arts Enrichment Sessions and other small group classes?
Enrolled singers in CCC’s after school programs will be given sign-up information for all other sessions separately to best suit their schedule and course preferences.
My child only wants to participate in Neighborhood Choir. Can I register for just this portion of programming?
CCC aims to provide a well-rounded, high quality experience for singers. While we believe participation in all opportunities creates an unparalleled holistic music education experience, participation in the Arts Enrichment Sessions and small group sessions are optional.
