A survey of Western classical music from its earliest beginnings to present day. In this course, we will explore through listening and discussion how this music has influenced and moved people for centuries, told through the eyes of those who created it, inspired it, played it and listened to it.
Sessions 1A & 2A: Pre-history/Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque An exploration of the many forms of expression in early music, from single-note plainchant to the great masterworks of the High Baroque.
Sessions 2A & 2B: Classic, Romantic, Impressionistic, Modern As times change, so does music. We’ll discover how factors such as society, art, and nature influenced the way people made and consumed music from 1750 onward.
Arts Enrichment Sessions are four or eight week courses offering high quality, specialized music education to any interested young person aged 8-18.
All sessions will take place virtually on Zoom between September 14 and February 6 between 4:00pm CST and 7:00pm CST. A personal device with internet access is required to participate. For educational and marketing purposes, all sessions will be recorded.
No classes will be held November 22-26 or December 14 – January 9. Many sessions have more than one class time available. There will be a place to indicate your schedule preference, and we will do our best to accommodate requests. Based on enrollment, CCC staff may need to place singers in the next available time-slot or session.
Levels are described as the following:
- Beginning: Suggested for ages 8-11 or CCC’s Allegro and Vivace ensembles.
- Intermediate: Suggested for ages 11-14 or CCC’s Vivace, Presto and DiMension ensembles.
- Advanced: Suggested for ages 14-18 or CCC’s Presto, DiMension and Voice of Chicago ensembles.
