The Tradition of African-American Spirituals - Chicago Children's Choir

Take a journey through Black history by-way-of the first truly American art form, the spiritual. Singers will discuss the evolution of the art form, listen to performances by pioneers in the genre and form their own interpretations through the performance of standard repertoire.

Session Logistics

Arts Enrichment Sessions are four or eight week courses offering high quality, specialized music education to any interested young person aged 8-18.

All sessions will take place virtually on Zoom between September 14 and February 6 between 4:00pm CST and 7:00pm CST. A personal device with internet access is required to participate. For educational and marketing purposes, all sessions will be recorded.

No classes will be held November 22-26 or December 14 – January 9. Many sessions have more than one class time available. There will be a place to indicate your schedule preference, and we will do our best to accommodate requests. Based on enrollment, CCC staff may need to place singers in the next available time-slot or session.

Levels are described as the following:

  • Beginning: Suggested for ages 8-11 or CCC’s Allegro and Vivace ensembles.
  • Intermediate: Suggested for ages 11-14 or CCC’s Vivace, Presto and DiMension ensembles.
  • Advanced: Suggested for ages 14-18 or CCC’s Presto, DiMension and Voice of Chicago ensembles.
